To Qualify for Priority Registration

1. Core Steps must be completed.

2A. You will need to have been in foster care - between the ages of 13-18 at least one day, up until the age of 25.

2B. In the case of a former homeless youth - a student under 25 years of age, who has been verified, at any time during the 24 months immediately preceding the application for admission.

  • Priority Registration will be assigned for 6 years, upon verification of homeless status. 
    • Submit an Official Letter from a high school or school district homeless liaison, the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program, or the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program.

3. Send ward letter or homeless verification letter to Barbara Bond or Liz Camboia

Chafee Eligibility & MJC/Financial Aid Tips

Chafee Grant Eligibility

The California Department of Social Services will determine your foster youth eligibility status.

  • Be a current or former foster youth who was a ward of the court, living in foster care, between the ages of 16 and 18.
  • If you are/were in Kin-GAP, a non-related legal guardianship, or were adopted, you are eligible only if you were a dependent or ward of the court, living in foster care, between the ages of 16 and 18.
  • Not have reached your 26th birthday as of July 1st of the award year.
  • Not have participated in the program for more than 5 years (whether or not consecutive).

Chafee Grant Application

WebGrants 4 Students - WGS will allow you to manage your Cal Grant and/or Chafee account(s), and Cal Dream Act

    • View updates, add MJC as your school, make changes or corrections. 

Application, Fee Waivers, FAFSA or CA Dream Act

  • MJC Application - Make sure that you indicate that you are a current or former foster youth to receive information and guidance on all available services (including Priority Level 1 registration).
  • FAFSA - Make sure that you indicate your current or previous foster youth status (to skip parental information requirement), and to receive information on additional grant opportunities.
  • MJC's school code for the Cal Dream application is 00124000
  • FAFSA - Student Homelessness Questions
    • Students that are under the age of 24, are required to provide parental information.
