As we switch to remote instruction, courses normally taught on campus may need to continue through other modalities.

Courses may rely on Canvas, MJC’s learning management system, for class discussions, assignments, and other activities. Instructors may also use ConferZoom or other video application for live class sessions and meetings. When remote instruction is used, the amount of work required of students should approximate what would have been expected if the course were still meeting on campus.


For Midterms and Finals: Consider assessments or projects that can be accomplished using Canvas.

In addition, instructors will maintain Regular Effective Contact (REC) with their students as described in MJC Academic Senate Resolution S18-B, “Regular and Effective Contact for Online Courses.” For example, REC may include weekly announcements, participation in discussions, feedback on assignments, email correspondence, remote office hours, and other methods of REC. Further details and examples can be found in the REC at MJC Canvas shell.

The tools used and content provided through remote instruction need to be made accessible. Canvas content can be checked for accessibility using the Canvas Accessibility Checker. Live closed captions can also be ordered for ConferZoom meetings, as described in this video. Additional resources for accessibility can be found on the “Online Faculty Resources” page of the MJC website.

Zoom is an outstanding, easy-to-use video conferencing tool. It looks like the opening of The Brady Bunch. All you need is a webcam. It also works great on smartphones. Zoom is paid for by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, which means it’s free for faculty and staff. Students can click on a link to join your meeting (they do not need to register).

Open a ConferZoom Account

  1. Go to and click on the “Sign Up” button
  2. Fill out the form. Under “organization,” type in Modesto Junior College
  3. Under email, use your account
  4. Check your email for your receipt. (You may need to check spam and clutter)
    • Due to high volume of requests, final approval with email receipts may not appear for 72 hours.
  5. Your ConferZoom account is ready to use!

  • "6 Tips to Successfully Work From Home" WorkshopTransitioning from working in an office environment to working from home can be confusing and stressful. Mastering remote work is about finding appropriate tools that allow you to stay productive and connected. This training will offer tips to successfully work from home in an efficient and productive manner.
  • COVID-19 Resources and Contacts will take you to a wiki page of consolidated CCC System resources and contacts for specific online and network services that may be helpful during this transition.
  • 3CSN is hosting a series of Zoom online sessions to help faculty and staff navigate online environments. Sessions include learning the basics of both Zoom and Canvas. Sessions will be limited to 50 participants. You can find a full schedule of sessions and times here.
  • CVC-OEI is also providing a number of webinars that may be helpful as colleges transition learning and student support services to a remote environment.  A listing of webinars is available on the CVC-OEI Resources page. Recordings will be posted afterward for people who are unable to attend.

  • Best Practices: The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice at Temple University has posted a webinar providing an overview of the support students will need to remain enrolled and how institutions can best provide those supports.
  • Student Supports: Many people have asked how to help our students cope with stress and anxiety during this pandemic, while we are all figuring out how to manage it ourselves. The CDC has put together a valuable guide on easing fear and anxiety during this uncertain time.
  • The meditation site Headspace is also offering a free collection called Weathering the Storm. It offers guided meditations and sleep and movement exercises to help get everyone through this time.
